First things first - ALL religions are inherently bad. Islam,
Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, I don't care. They all have the
same goal - subjugating our human will. And they all boil down to the
same thing - a human (like you and me) is telling us what God wants.
Sometimes the human wears a turban. Sometimes he wears a dress and a
pointy hat. But they're ALL human, and they have no more idea of what
God wants than you or me or the neighbour's cat. But that doesn't stop
them from bilking the poor and ignorant out of their money and causing
division and hatred over most of recorded history.
Now, on to Islam. Currently, it's the least tolerant religion and
therefore should be the most feared. It should DEFINITELY not be
afforded special protections (papers afraid to publish the Muhammad
cartoons, laws and regulations bent in a Sharia direction, etc.)
Christianity was a murderous terrible cult for long periods of it's
history (Inquisitions, Crusades), but these days it's mostly benign,
inflicting most of it's harm merely on our intellect and not so much on
our bodies anymore. The Church was reined in by secular authority, and
this is what can't happen in Islamic countries, because there exists no
division between religion and the law. Go to Saudi Arabia or Syria and
experience an Inquisition that never ends. But in Canada and the US and
anywhere else that believes in separation of church and state, we don't
have to bend to Islamic will. Freedom OF religion also means freedom
FROM religion.
There are those who would like to whittle away at these freedoms of
ours and make Canada more conducive to Sharia law, and we must guard
against this. People like Syed Soharwardy, president of the Islamic
Supreme Council of Canada, who wrote in 2004, "Sharia
cannot be customized for specific countries. These universal, divine
laws are for all people of all countries for all times. I am one of the
founding members of the Islamic Institute of Civil Justice. The mandate
of the institute is to resolve disputes within existing Canadian laws
by using the principles of conflict resolution from Islamic Law, or
sharia."
No thank you, Mr. Soharwardy. Canadians wouldn't like Sharia law. For
one thing, we enjoy beer (illegal). We let our women dress how they
like (illegal). And we're not fond of stoning girls for the crime of
being raped or of fathers killing their teenage daughters for not
dressing like a pepper mill.
To summarize, I don't subscribe to any religion, so I'm not coming at
Islam from any religious angle. I believe we need to be aware of it's
tendencies (even among it's moderates) to insinuate itself into our
laws and customs. We must defend against this so that we can keep
Canada free from Sharia insanity.
